"श,ष,स have sounds peculiar to Assamese. They represent Sanskrit श,ष and स in initial position. But their pronunciation is sometimes like ख and sometimes like ह. In the compound letters or conjunct consonants they are pronounced like English’s’. e.g.-शागुन (हागुन) - vulture, षाठि (हाठि) - sixty, सीता (हीता), बिषय (बिखय), श्रम (स्रम) - labour, स्नान (स्नान) - bath, विष्णु (विस्नु) - Lord Vishnu, etc."

डॉ० ग्रियर्सन “Linguistic Survey of India” (सन्दर्भ 2, पृष्ठ 401) में लिखते हैं - "The three letters श, ष and स, when not compounded with any other consonant, are all pronounced something like a rough German ch, or like the Arabic ख़े ".

डॉ० काकती अपनी थीसिस "Assamese, Its Formation and Development" में लिखते हैं (सन्दर्भ 3, पृष्ठ 63)-
"To sum up, the sibilants have different sound values in initial and non-initial positions in ts. [2] words and they are treated differently in non-initial positions in tbh. words. In initial positions in both ts. and tbh. words they are pronounced as x., but in non-initial positions in ts. words they are pronounced as kh. In non-initial positions in tbh. words, they are all changed to h............. In the case of the numerals, the sibilant श has a स sound and is a borrowed one. In some borrowed forms, palatal च [3] is substituted for the sibilants in writing. In compound consonant groups, the sibilants retain an 's' sound".

0h = Tamil क् , ∴ ; medial soft guttural as in Dutch g, also found in Assamese, Hindustani ह़ , Urdu हे. [here, in "oh", the o is in the superscript]

0hk = Hindustani ख़् , high guttural like cleaning throat (अख़बार ) – Urdu ख़े । [here, in "ohk", the o is in the superscript]
